Being a fan of the Tampa Bay Rays and the Tampa, Florida area in general, I was pleased to come across a Yahoo Sports page devoted to Tampa-area sports news.
With spring training beginning this week, there are lots of baseball news stories covered on the Yahoo Sports page. One story reports on the annual spring training press conference that is held by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Some of the topics that were covered at the press conference included Matt Duffy’s good health, Brendan McKay’s improvement, Jose De Leon’s pitching prowess, and whether or not the team is in a rebuilding mode.
Chaim Bloom, Kevin Cash and Erik Neander sat on the deck, representing the team, and answered an assortment of questions from the media.
More than 40 pitchers and catchers are on the lineup for the Rays’ spring training. The team officially announced that they have signed relief pitcher Sergio Romo to a one-year contract that is worth $2.5 million.
As Romo is coming on board the Jay’s roster, Micah Johnson has been reassigned to play for Tampa Bay’s Triple-A affiliate, the Durham Bulls. Although he is not on the 40-man roster, Johnson will still be a part of the team, on an invite-basis.
A couple of scenarios concerning a possible trade involving the Ray’s Jake Odorizzi are mentioned on the Tampa sports news page. The possible teams that are mentioned include the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.
Another topic that is covered on the sports news page is the large field of contenders for the second base position with the Rays. As it stands, half a dozen players are vying for the spot.
Tampa, Florida, is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year, but when professional baseball spring training is taking place, the city is even more of a fun destination-spot. There’s nothing like eating a hot dog or an ice cream cone while you’re sitting in the stands, watching a spring training baseball game in Tampa, Florida.
