Kapler Re-signs

October 27th, 2009 | by Jason Collette |

Rays beat writer Marc Topkin (@SPTimesRays) is reporting that Gabe Kapler has resigned with the club on another one year deal for 1.05m.  My initial thoughts is that this sets up a R/L platoon between he and Matt Joyce for the 2010 season. Kapler hit .273 with a .931 OPS against left-handed pitching this season in 145 at bats but did slightly more than I did against righties in 2009 so hopefully he never sees one in 2010. Additionally, his solid outfield defense stays with the club one more season.

That sure does make the outfield crowded if we were looking at Jennings or Perez making the opening day roster next year…

I guess we’ll know as more moves are done this off-season. If the club moves Zobrist in as a fulltime 2B, this gives Kapler and likely Joyce as the RF platoon with Perez as a LF/CF reserve. I don’t think Gabe Gross gets arbitration and the club has already said Jennings’s chance of making the opening day roster are pretty close to zero.
